Pin-Up Girl’s Music: October 2016

Inspirations: Disney’s Cinderella (2015)

There’s been a hype now with Disney’s live-action remakes. With the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, which happens to be my dad’s favorite Disney movie, I have to write about another Disney classic which was made into a live-action film just last year. I had my doubts about the new take on Cinderella, but I was surprised that they kept the romantic fantasy alive. Recent movies carry a theme on topics such as sisterhood (Frozen), feminism (Tangled), and growing up (Toy Story 3). So, it was nice to have a film that was back in touch with Disney’s Once Upon a Time.

The fashion is the best part of Cinderella. Throughout the entire film I could not help but burst with excitement. Seriously, every piece Cate Blanchette wore, along with all the corsets and the silk fabrics…

The costumes were designed by Sandy Powell, and she executed the designs with the idea of  “a nineteenth-century period film made in the 1940s or ’50s,” (Click here to for more on Sandy Powell)

Here are some of my favorites from the film:

Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce played an inspiration to the designs of the stepmother.

Art deco jewelry and waist fitting belts. Along with jewel toned fabrics. Sculpted hair, and red lipstick to match.

Something similar is Jean Harlow in her negligee.

I loved Cinderella’s dress, the colors were so pretty. The ruffled off-shoulder cut reminded me of this design by Balenciaga from 1952.

You can’t forget the step sisters….I loved how their style represented their personalities. Over the top, loud and attention seeking. The ruffles, corsets and use of the wired petticoat isn’t quite mid-century fashion. Rather it’s more of the modern day goth.

Again, with a more 19th century cross modern-day goth, the Fairy Godmother’s dress is just as dreamy as Cinderella’s. And it’s Helena Bonham Carter who is the queen of corsets and lace.

Lastly, the wedding gown. I have no words.

Which of the Cinderella characters are your favorite?

Vintage Waves: Tried & Tested from Vintage Vandalizm

I’m not going to lie, recreating vintage hairstyles is very difficult. It takes time and lots of patience. But, that’s what gives the glamour to the entire look, taking the time to perfect the hair and giving it the best potential. It’s not just a brush and go, it’s really about sculpting and styling. Finding the right technique can take years and I decided to check out the beautiful Vintage Vandalizm’s routine. I have to say that I am completely satisfied! Of course, I still need to practice and I am adding in a few of my own touches. Once I perfect it, I promise to share so keep a look out for my tutorial!

Vintage Videos: Keeping Well Dressed

We just don’t do it anymore. Keeping neat, taking care of our clothes expensive or inexpensive, and overall taking the time to appreciate the work in our wardrobe.

Oh, the days.

BenCab Museum: Abby Jocson bag, and a vintage belt

The BenCab Museum near Baguio City was so much fun. Aside from the vast collection of Ben, our guide Ryan gave us a unique experience through the museum. He himself is very artistic, taking our smart phones and incorporate the art into our photos.

My photos are taken in the erotica section, where there are interesting works of art on the…well art of sex. It’s a very popular feature in this museum.

Obsessed with mermaids, finding this bag was a dream. Abby Jocson has numerous quirky designs from pineapples to hearts. My belt is from Pattye’s Closet, a vintage boutique in Glendale.  It was a score (at just $10). The swallows are classic. Something from Sailor Jerry, or any flash tattoo design.

Old fashion or the latest thing? Burger joints are still well and alive. Creamy milkshakes and juicy burgers, all you need now is the whole gang on a Friday night.

Vintage Videos: 1944 College Girl Fashion

It’s been about 3 1/2 years since I graduated from college. This video makes me wish I dressed just as classy as these girls.

Totally reminds me of “Mona Lisa Smile”.

Inspiration: Priscilla Presley

Lady Presley as I know her. She is the wife of the late great King Elvis Presley. I won’t go into any details on how, when, where and every detail of her life . (You can watch her very very interesting history with Elvis and her special life here.) I just want to focus on her unique beauty and style. With all the research I’ve done about her, Elvis had a HUGE say in her fashion. I like to think of it as him helping her grow into the fashionable Priscilla she is today.

Priscilla before Elvis’ fashionable guidance

Lana del Rey is the biggest modern day Priscilla (FASHION WISE!) From her hair, makeup, the lips and that lifted nose. Even some of Priscilla’s photos have been imitated by Lana.

I love her baby doll face. Now, she isn’t necessarily ‘pin-up’ fashion so to speak. But, what I love about her style is it was the definition of the early 1960s and 70’s. Her make-up is my ultimate inspiration, and today I try to do her lethal cut-crease and winged eyeliner.  All rock n’ roll and glamour. Here are some of my favorite Priscilla looks and see how her style transforms :
